I always joke that my life is a rom-com with more com than rom, but realistically, there’s a bit of both.
I’ve shared many stories with you that are almost as though they’re straight out of a movie, and this experience is another one to add to the list, so here we go…
A few times a week, I go to the chiropractor to get adjusted (I have horrible posture), and for whatever reason, I always picture seeing the guy who broke my heart sitting at the cafe next door. One day, I’m gonna be walking into that office building and I’m gonna hear my name, and it’ll be him sitting there with a latte.
I’m so dramatic.
Anyway, on Friday, I went for my appointment and while rushing in, I noticed, through my peripheral vision, a gentleman sitting by himself outside of the cafe. I didn’t skip a beat and kept walking but thought to myself, “Wow, that kinda looked like him.”
I continued on with my cracking, and then as I walked out, I tried to get a better look at the man with his cap on glancing down at the table. I tried to be smooth, made a casual glance, and then full panic.
Holy shit, that’s him.
I kept walking across the street to get my key from the valet guy, wondering if he saw me, too, and getting super annoyed that I decided to air-dry my frizzy hair that day.
While giving the valet guy my ticket to get my key, my gut told me to turn around and go back. So what did I do? I turned around.
“Oh no, I forgot something. I’ll be right back,” I told the valet guy.
I ran down the street (dramatic), ran right past him (still sitting alone at the table) and ran into the building to make it look like I forgot something. Instead, I ran down the hall, turned into a little opening and tried to calm my nerves.
OK, Bruna, this is what you’re going to do. You’re going to casually walk out of here. You’re going to stop walking right when you reach his side so he notices and looks up, and you’re just gonna say, “Hey.”
A few inhales and what-the-fuck-are-you-thinking‘s later, I started my casual stride (while also trying to comb down my hair).
I step outside. I stop walking. He notices. He looks up at me. And I freeze.
It wasn’t him.
Here I was looking like a crazy person just staring at this stranger, who is probably wondering why this odd young woman is just chillin’ there looking at him, and instead of doing the less-awkward approach by saying, “I’m sorry, I thought you were someone else. Have a great day,” I just started gazing off into the distance and walked away.
LOL! BRUNA WTF?!
I walked back feeling a mixture of emotions. I laughed. I cried. I felt relieved but also so sad. It was literally like those moments in the movie when the person swears they see the person they love in a crowd and runs over to catch them, and just when they get close enough, they realize it’s not them.
But wait, there’s more…
Fast-forward to yesterday, and I’m lounging on my couch aimlessly swiping on Bumble (because life), and my heart stops again. Is it him?!
No. IT’S THE FREAKIN’ GUY I THOUGHT WAS HIM OUTSIDE THE CAFE!
What the hell. So I look at his profile, and once again shake my head in disbelief at how much they look alike, and swipe right with the hope of being able to message him and tell him, “Hey I’m the weird girl who was staring at you outside of that cafe. Sorry about that. Big misunderstanding.”
So I swiped, and we were a match and I messaged him with the story and he laughed and said he’d actually been thinking of me every day since and wished he ran after me and then we met up and fell in love and lived happily ever after.
I swiped right and nothing happened. We weren’t a match. So either he didn’t come across my profile yet or he saw me and thought, “Oh shit, it’s that girl. LEFT.”
(Plus, I’m not sure it would be smart to date someone who resembles someone from your past so much. However, should things change, I’ll keep you posted. Duh.)
Either way, it was a crazy moment and I still can’t really believe it happened, so I wanted to share it with you guys.
This is my life. Let’s just hope that my rom-com has a happy ending.
